Technology and security

  • How does the card work and what technology does it use?

There are two basic types of smart card, according to how the information between the card and the reader is transferred. A contactless card contains only a contactless chip. The hybrid card contains an additional contact chip.

Contactless Opencard is the standard version. The hybrid version is issued only when specifically applied for.

  • How is the card protected against abuse?

Every card has a unique number assigned by Opencard; it is linked with the card holder’s identity. This number serves as a unique identification for electronic contact machines. The photograph on the card enables visual identification of the card holder. The contact chip version of the card is further secured with a PIN code and technical certificate for secure communication on the internet. Memory of both chips is write-protected by access codes. Applications and data on both chips can be entered only by authorised organisations.

  • How is personal data protected against abuse?

The first name, surname and photograph of the card holder are printed on the card. This data serves for the visual verification of the card holder’s identity during some operations. The date of birth is recorded in the contactless chip. Data is protected against editing by access codes. Personal data can be entered in the contactless chip only by an authorised organisation.

Photographs of card holders are not stored; they are used only to print on the card. The Opencard contact centre uses personal data (with the exception of the photograph), which is part of the card, and contact information of the card holder (e-mail, mobile phone number, contact address) for the purpose of administration of the card life cycle. Contact data serves for day-to-day communication with card holders, to inform that the card has been produced and is ready to be collected, for notification about new possibilities of use, and for information regarding the life cycle of cards etc.

  • How big is the risk of card abuse when the card is lost and how can I eliminate it?

The risk of abuse results from the nature of individual card applications. The card is blocked at all terminals within 24 hours of notification of its loss by the card holder; all card applications that were registered in the card service centre are also blocked.

  • What type of chip card readers is compatible with Opencard with the contact chip?

You can find the list of the most common readers that can read the Opencard contact chip on the website www.monetplus.cz/cz/ctecky.aspx.

You can find more information in the section "Security and personal data"
