How the Card Works

There are two types of Opencard depending on the type of the chip used:

OPENCARD

  • Contains one contactless chip only
  • This is a standard version of Opencard. It can be used for all services that are part of the Opencard project:
    • Payment for parking
    • Public transport vouchers
    • Identification in the Municipal Library of Prague

OPENCARD WITH CONTACT CHIP

  • It contains both a contactless and contact chip
  • It offers an additional option to save an electronic signature
  • It is issued only when especially applied for, and it is issued within 21 days of application

Because there has been such a huge demand, it is possible there will be some delay in issuing the card.

Advantages of Contactless chip

  • The chip is hidden in the body of the card, and is used only for contactless transfer of data
  • Information between a card reader and the chip is done using a high-frequency electromagnetic field (airwaves)
  • Because the chip is embedded, the card is much more resilient to damage; there is virtually no depreciation in the electronics over time.
